I am looking for a Reading Test that I can give during the first week of school to my 9th graders that will determine their grade level in reading, so I can tell them, "You're reading at a 7th grade level" and help motivate them throughout the year while we take a similar test midway through and at the end. A benchmark, just for reading, with an easy extrapolation to grade level of reading skills.
Can anyone help?

Gates MacGinitie is the gold standard in testing reading. It'll do exactly what you want.
Anon #1 is correct. The Gates is a good measure. It is expensive to purchase to start out, but if your school has the funds, it can be very useful. You can send it away to be scored, or you can score by hand.
Yes, I've heard of this before and think the district paid for it a few years ago. This will likely be out of pocket, though. I've done some googling and can't figure out where to get my hands on one to purchase.
Scroll down and click on the order form, prices are shown there : http://www.riversidepublishing.com/products/gmrt/pricing.html

I hate the Gates. It was a very limited test for my uses (elementary reading) and I didn't feel like it was super relevant to the kids. (On one irritating question, the "house" was a single family home, while all my kids live in row housed and projects which looked much more like the "store".) We used it at our school for many moons, but switched to Fountas and Pinnell benchmark test. (Which unfortunately does not go into high school.)
I'm not sure what other options there are...but I vote no on Gates.
