"Are you alright? What's wrong with your face?"

It could be that I just got done with a little surgery and my stitches hurt, but today it was so hot that it felt downright unhealthy, and I was shocked that we weren't dismissed early. I felt ill and left home early, cancelling coach class and booking out after my last class. It's that hot. Actually, it's probably more the humidity than the heat that is making me weak, making me feel like I want to faint, and making the skin behind my ears peel.

Long, long day. When will this heat end? When will the school be equipped with a/c? It really feels wrong that we make kids sit in this heat and that we have to teach in it.

I love my 10th period, though!

It's hard for me to conceive of a school without A/C. Of course, this is Texas, and it does get even hotter here at times. We do at times have rooms that are hotter or colder than others, but for the most part, the inside temperature is the least of our worries. When we administer the state test (TAKS), the tests can be invalidated if the room temperature is uncomfortable for the students. Sounds like a far cry from your situation.

I got heat exhaustion from the heat in my school last year and was in bed for a week and sick for another two. The administrators at my school have air conditioned offices while the kids end up in the nurse's office because they've been felled by the heat. They call off marathons, don't they?

P.S. Just because your surgery was "minor", you still had surgery and your body is using some extra energy for healing. You're not gonna be able to tolerate brutal heat as well as you would if you were in healing mode. Take it easy on yourself.

I have a feeling Dr. Alonso will rarely, if ever, call school early for heat. The bigger question down the road is whether he understands about ice storms down at this latitude...
