Teaching on August 7

I wish I could convey how horrible it was teaching in 106-degree heat index, in a building with no ventilation or central air, in a room that often is considered the hottest room in the school (on account of the asphalt outside the windows).

I went through four sweat rags. My voice was hoarse from dehydration. Kids sagged in their seats.

It's great to be back!

Suggestion: get several Nalgene or old soda bottles and fill 1/3 the way (allows for ice expansion), freeze overnight, fill any remaining space, and keep them on your desk. You might want paper towels underneath to absorb the condensation. Keep drinking (the H2O that is!!) We don't need you down from heat exhaustion or worse before the year actually gets rolling!

Oh...BTW...it coulda been worse. You could have been in one of the 3rd floor science rooms that have the sun hit them for pretty much all of the day!

What a crime - imagine how the kids feel. I was actually teaching summer school in B-more and the system cancelled summer school for the day, even though all of the summer school classes were taught in schools with A/C that year. They were actually concerned about the health of students traveling to and from the schools. The only reason that didn't happen to you is probably because the citywide summer school is over for the summer and the system didn't even think anyone would be idiot enough to be in the schools on a hot-a** day like today. It is a health hazard, and I hope no one passes out and files a lawsuit for cracking their head open on a hallway floor when it happens. At least either way you'll be set when you die - heaven will be a welcome reprieve and hell will be no sweat!
