Update on the foot and the beach

Today was my first day back at the gym since hurting my foot. It's gotten a little bit better, but still is pretty darn tender. Apparently I have a small stress fracture, but it's so small that the first doctor did not see it in the x-ray. Still, I walk with a limp and it might go on for a while, like several weeks. I'm afraid my running career might nearly be over. Maybe a guy who tips the scales at well over 200 lbs should stick to the eliptical machine. Or maybe I just have to get fancy shoes - although the podiatrist did check out my old Adisasis, and he said they were fine. I don't know. We'll see what he says during the follow-up, which is set for August 2.

Anyhow, it was nice to get back to the gym and work up a little bit of a sweat, mostly on the bike and from lifting weights. However, I wrapped my foot so tightly that I limped more than I do without the wrapping. I might stick with no wrap tomorrow; the doctor said to leave it on for a week, and tomorrow will mark six days.

My sister flies in tomorrow, and I plan on bringing her to Brewer's Art right after she touches down to show her Baltimore's best bar. She just told me yesterday that she broke up with her longterm boyfriend yesterday, so the trip couldn't come at a better time for her. It will be nice to bond with my sister for a few days. I've decided to drive to Ocean City on Friday morning with her, stay there a few hours, and then drive up to Rehoboth Beach to spend the night and be there in the morning. I actually booked a hotel room, which is something my spontaneous self doesn't usually like to do. It is probably for the best, though.

In all seriousness, call my cell phone when you get to OC. I know the area like the back of my hand, and I can give you a few recommendations of where to go before you head up to Rehoboth.

As for the running, it will come back. You just need to take it slow with the stress fracture. It sucks in the meantime.

Since Rehoboth is much smaller than OC, you can just wander the main street, Rehoboth Ave., that runs perpendicular to the beach, veer off a bit to the side streets, and then along the Boardwalk.

In addition to my previous recommendation about Nicolas, I've never been, but you might like Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats.

If you want to venture to a bar, take a detour south of Rehoboth a couple of miles to Dewey Beach. (You'll drive through on your way up from OC.) You could try The Starboard (haven't been there in 5 years) or The Rusty Rudder. The Rudder has live music. The Starboard has sand. They're both on the bay side. I don't have personal experience with this service, but there is a shuttle between the 2 beaches called the "Jolly Trolley".

Have fun! Good luck with your foot.
