My sister is visiting from Thursday through Monday. She wants to visit the ocean, where I have never been in Maryland despite my six years living here. She's coming in on Thursday afternoon, and the trip I am thinking about is as follows:
Leave very early Friday, and stop at Assateague Island for a few hours - say, from 9-12, then head to Ocean City for the rest of the afternoon. In the late evening, drive up to Rehobeth Beach, where we'll spend the night and be able to spend the next day there before driving back to Baltimore on Saturday night.
Thoughts? Tips?

Biting off more than you can chew.
Assateaugue is a solid three+ hours - even with little to no traffic. You'd have to leave by 6:00 AM. You're not missing anything in OC, and there is no quaint seaside drive up the coast. Just take bikes, or rent then when you get there, bike the nature trails on Assateague, and enjoy the day. You can stay over there. Chincoteague is a cute little place to explore. Anything else in a day is too much.
I agree with the other posters. If your sister wants to do a traditional Boardwalk thing, head over to OC but otherwise, just stick with Assateaugue. Assateague is beautiful and less crowded than OC. Honestly, OC is the hot spot for all MD high school students...probably don't want to be there.
Thanks everyone!
I've never seen a boardwalk, and neither has my sister, so I'd at least like to see Ocean City, even if it's on the way to Rehobeth. And I won't be able to do much in the way of biking/hiking with my broken foot.
Look, all those places are pretty cool, Assateague, OC and Rehobeth. Each one has their charms and are well worth a visit, just not on the same weekend. If you want to go to Ocean City to enjoy the boardwalk, then go there. If you want to reduce hassles, arrange for lodging well in advance so you don't spend your afternoon going from hotel to hotel to hotel arguing about room rates. I'm a boardwalk fan myself, lots of good people watching down there. Assateague is cool too, but get your campsite reservation before you go, the place fills up. I'll be at Assateague next week and we've had our site reservation for months. Rehobeth is probably the toughest place to get a room and rooms are expensive. That place is fun to watch the boys hold hands, always a hoot.
Proper planning prevents piss poor performance.
PS: Ponies get diarrhea after they eat pretzels and chips that they steal from the campsites, so keep your distance.
Having been to Assateague, OC, & Rehoboth...I agree with the other posters. It's a long drive to Assateague and a long drive from there to OC to Rehoboth.
Although Assateague is lovely, I'd cut that out. If you must go to OC, I'd go there Friday and Rehoboth on Saturday. The only thing I really like about OC is the mini golf selection. I'm partial to Rehoboth, having gone there as a kid. There is a small boardwalk and Funland and Nicola Pizza.
If on your drive from OC to Rehoboth, you're hungry. I highly recommend Warren's Station in Fenwick Island, just over the border from OC in DE.
Have a great trip!
Cham: Thanks. It's so weird about room-finding in Rehobeth, as I'd heard it was easier there than Ocean City. No camping this trip; I'll be camping the whole next weekend in SW Michigan.
Danielle: According to the internet, Ocean City is 8 miles from Assoteague, and I heard that Ocean City and Rehobeth are only about an hour away from each other. Am I getting inaccurate information?
I'll probably take your advice and got out the ponies. I'm not even so sure the sister is excited about that. I think I am from reading my mom's Marguerite Henry books when I was little.
I'd just go to Rehobeth for the weekend. It's nicer than O.C. and has its own boardwalk-not as big as OC's but you'll get the feel for it. Have fun!
You're right. Assateague is right next to OC.
It will take at least an hour to get from OC to Rehoboth. It's slow driving through OC, because there is a light nearly every block - all the way from 1st St. to 146th St.!
Since, it will take you at least 3 hours to get to one of the beaches, I wouldn't want to spend extra time driving from beach to beach while there, but that's my preference. If you've never been, I can understand wanting to fit more in.
The ponies are nice. My only experience at Assateague was camping one unseasonably warm Easter break week when I was teaching and the park was empty. I don't know how it is in the summer. Crowded, I imagine.
Wherever you end up, it is the beach, so I don't think you can go too wrong.
I second Nicola's pizza! Best pizza! (don't fall for the hype about Grottos pizza- not that great but they do have a shop that faces the boardwalk/ocean).
Also be aware that in Rehobeth thats there really is only one road in towards the beach and doesn't take much for it to become backed up. There are also many outlets there for shopping if you so desire.
