Education cuts never heal

My class sizes: 28, 29, 28, 35, 35.

How is that shit allowed to happen? And that's not even the worst of it. I have 155 students; some of my colleagues have 170. These are high-stakes classes, and the two 35 classes are IB courses that involve a lot of audiotaping and discussion.

The Baltimore School Board voted to increase the student:teacher ratio from 28:1 to 32:1 this past June because of budgetary concerns, and that just sucks. Sucks sucks sucks.

American public education needs help - more teachers and more funding. I have nothing else to add, except that this year could be a tough one. Finding enough desks for my room today was rough.

I have 32 more students in my classes than I did last year, and in my mind, that should be another section. It's not though...I just have larger classes. I'm not looking forward to it at all. Bleah.

That's so depressing to me. I have 2 little kids and we live in the city. I know there are excellent schools in the city-yours being one of them-and I'd love to send my kids to them, even though I'm a private school grad myself. Still, those numbers are disheartening to a parent-I think the average class size in my high school was around 15.

It's all over...I'm in AZ and my only "small" class is at 27, with the others ranging from 31-35. I have 158 but am relieved, at this point, that I'm down from the 164 I had last week. Fortunately this year I'm down to only one prep, so it's not so bad. Next year I'll probably be looking at 3 with the same numbers, though.

I'm really feeling it the most with all the grading. Argh.

I just wish there was more coverage of this. Somehow, the Baltimore City Public School Board voted for this change in June and nothing was reported.

Don't you dare "find" desks for your students. Let them stand or sit on the floor. When you do soneone else's job you solve the problem the parents would have called the politicians about. You helped get yourself screwed.

Don't buy anything either. Let hte kids go without. Let the parents fuss at the politicians about the problem. Use only what the politicians provided for your class.

I work at Bowie High in PG county. I NEVER make up for Admin or Politicain mess-ups. I direct all complaints to the people responsible. I end up with what I want in the end.

Give it a try.

Unfortunately, if I refused to get desks, it would have fell on the shoulders of our custodians, who are generally twice my age and make probably half of what I do. They're still dealing with a breakin and major vandalism in my school, and I didn't want to add to it.
