One of the best things in the Baltimore area is The Mark Steiner Show on WYPR. Reasoned analysis from all sides, an honest host who obviously loves this city and its people who doesn't attempt to hide bias, no histrionics, and a focus on issues of great importance, most specifically education.
And one of the best things about the Mark Steiner Show is this crazy loon named Jerry from Timonium who calls in nearly every day. I don't know how I feel about his seemingly well-rehearsed rants, during which it appears he's working himself into a heart attack, but I know I'm fascinated by him. What kind of a life does he lead? Does he hear the morning ad for the show, spend the morning researching, and then call in with his analysis? The man really is a wonder. And what does Steiner think about his biggest fan? He seems bemused by him.

Jerry actually makes the rounds on the talk shows in Baltimore, epiph. I caught him on something on WEAA (Morgan State's Radio Station) while just surfing around.
From what I can tell, Steiner just tolerates him.
Wow, the mystique of Jerry widens...
I always got the feeling that Steiner couldn't quite control Jerry but, as Jason says, he mostly just puts up with him.
Steiner has an oddball sense of timing. I can't tell you how many times he'll ask someone a question, then as the person starts to answer he suddenly realizes he's up against a hard break and cuts the guy off.
Hey - I found your blog by accident, but I understand that you are a young professional who lives in Baltimore City. I've enjoyed reading your posts.
I may have an opportunity to move to Baltimore soon for a job. If you have a minute, could you tell me ....
a.) what city neighborhoods are safe and affordable to live in?
b.) do you feel overly threatened by crime in Baltimore?
Thanks in advance.
1) A number of neighborhoods are safe - I live in Lauraville, which is pretty suburban and safe. Other safe areas include pretty much anywhere you would probably look - Federal Hill, Charles Village, Canton, Fell's Point, Mt. WAshington, Mt. Vernon. There are pockets of crime everywhere in these areas, but it doesn't seem any more than any typical big city.
2) I've actually never felt threatened by crime here. It doesn't affect how I live in any way. I know that our city has a high murder rate and all, but the way this city is set up, it's like that's another country. That's not to say you don't have to use common sense about walking alone or venturing into unknown areas, but it doesn't change how I live at all. The only difference with how I live here versus how I lived in my small southwest Michigan hometown growing up is I no longer leave my car running when I run into a convenience store.
Here's a city paper story about mr. jerry...

The story in the City Paper is a different Jerry (spelled Gerry). I happen to know Jerry from Timonium very well (the father of a very close friend) and believe it or not, he is a very successful businessman who has been friends with my father since high school.
The whole calling into the talk show thing is sort of a hobby, but it certainly makes for good entertainment. And while I wouldn't exactly call him a "loon", he is certainly eccentric.
I actually googled "Jerry from Timonium" for the hell of it and couldn't believe there were several entries. This is absolutely classic!
